Praiseworthy is one who looks after the poor; on a day of calamity God will rescue them.
— Tehillim / Psalms 41
Sometimes you need just $500 to make it through the month, and where are you going to get that help? Thanks to the generosity of our members and Jews nationally and internationally, Pico Shul has helped secure micro-loans for a dozen people with more than $10,000 in loans. Loans are paid back in monthly installments, are totally confidential, and contributions to the fund are tax-deductible. The fund is administered by a shul board member and Rabbi Yonah.
Domestic Violence Survivors Fund
After being approached by a local Jewish woman who survived attempted murder at the hands of her ex-husband, in front of her children, we decided to set up a special fund to help women who are survivors of domestic violence. In addition to connecting the women with any legal or social services they may still need, our Fund pays for deposits on apartments, back rent, delinquent bills, groceries and other necessities. The Fund is administered by a committee composed of a board member, a social worker, Rabbi Yonah and Rebbitzen Rachel.
Emergency Housing Fund
Earlier this year Pico Shul raised funds to keep two young adults in their apartments who had lost their jobs. Keeping people from becoming homeless is a substantial mitzvah and it can make the difference between hope and helplessness.
Recently it came to my attention that a 63 year-old gentleman that we have the privilege of knowing needs help. He’s not on drugs, he works part-time doing whatever he can find. He’s just down on his luck and behind on all his bills. Thanks to Pico Shul’s emergency housing fund — a gift towards housing — he now is living in a shared apartment and has a part-time job.
Checks can be sent to: Pico Shul, 9116 ½ W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90035
